XP reinstallation woes on Multiboot system
Last spring I received Vista Home Premium for my birthday and attempted to do a clean install on my Toshiba laptop running XP SP2. I'd not bother to restore the OS... merely modify boot.ini to get rid of the unwanted reference...and to just boot directly to XP Philo, Thank you for your prompt response.

Most likely what has happened is that the entries in Boot.ini (boot sector file) are incorrect. The file may be referencing files in the wrong location. I recently reformatted my C drive (XP) and did a clean install of Windows .NET 2003 (Pre Release) on it. Hi Group, I rebooted our server the other day, only to my horror that it would not boot. The long and short is that the BOOT.INI was missing. How To Clean Up After Eliminating Dual Boot?
There's not much room on the C drive, so doing a clean install, would likely necessitate first booting to Win 2000 so C:\Windows, C:\Program Files, etc. could be deleted . She would then need to boot from the Win 98 installation media. I'd have her copy boot.ini to another drive just in case.

Let's move on to your Boot.ini file. Originally your hard drive had a small first partition, 39MB, and a large second partition, your C drive. That would account for the second entry under I CAN access my old files, including files for programs i thought would have been deleted/overwritten by the clean install.
